ACCSR Event Recap: Annual Review of the State of CSR in Australia and New Zealand 2016 Launch

At the launch of ACCSR’s Annual Review of the State of CSR in Australia and New Zealand 2016, a panel discussed ways to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The review received 1,080 respondents from across Australia and New Zealand and found that the general focus areas were on Gender Equality, Good Health and Wellbeing, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure and Climate Action.

The report raised 3 major topics.

The Importance of Business

Businesses must take the reign if we want to meet the SDGs. Providing jobs and driving the economy means that businesses naturally become key players in people’s economic and general well-being. With an understanding of the importance of environmental and social issues, businesses are no longer seen as being at odds with sustainability.

Businesses should, therefore, create a plan to address the SDGs by mapping their operations and activities accordingly, and identifying potential impacts. After reviewing their results businesses can choose to focus on areas where they have the poorest impact and make plans to improve.

How Technology is needed to Measure and Report

Using technology effectively can ensure that progress is being made at both small and large scales. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is growing in popularity as the framework for measurement; therefore a customisable technology solution would be best suited to measuring and reporting on an organisation’s progress towards the SDG’s.

Additionally, reporting provides stakeholders with transparency and enables organisations to efficiently allocate their resources and strengthen their core purpose.

New Opportunities

New economic, social, and environmental opportunities may arise due to an organisation’s commitment to achieving the SDGs. Reviewing your organisation’s purpose can re-ignite your organisation’s core values. Engaging with stakeholders can also promote idea sharing, leading to the strengthening of your community as well as SDG and economically friendly innovation
